The West Coast of Africa has so much to offer, and the Volta region of Ghana is an undiscovered hiking paradise. Waterfalls, lakes, beaches, and peaks are all waiting to be explored.
When we couple the trekking with the history and culture, it will be a truly extraordinary place to share together. We have created a varied and powerful itinerary to bring Ghana to life as we explore together.
We have created an itinerary that will reveal the breadth of this nation to you in just ten days. From the far western Volta Region with mountain trails and hidden waterfalls, to the eastern Cape Coast region with rainforests, cultural history and powerful stories to hear. We will be seeing wildlife, summiting peaks, walking the beaches, eating amazing food and hitting up the energising markets.
All whilst escaping the February cold of the UK!

Accra
Today we embark on an enlightening city tour of Accra, the vibrant capital of Ghana. Our journey begins at Independence Square, a symbol of Ghana's struggle for independence and one of the most significant landmarks in the city. This site, marked by its grand arches and the perpetual flame, pays homage to the nation's freedom fighters.
Next, we visit the National Museum of Ghana. Here, we will delve into the rich tapestry of Ghanaian history, culture, and archaeology. The museum's exhibits range from traditional artefacts and ancient relics to contemporary art, offering insights into the country's diverse heritage.
Our tour continues at the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum, dedicated to Ghana's first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. This site serves both as a final resting place and a museum, chronicling the life and achievements of this pivotal figure in Ghana's history. The beautifully landscaped gardens and the striking statue of Nkrumah make this a memorable stop.
We conclude the tour in the historic Jamestown community, one of the oldest districts in Accra. Known for its lighthouse and vibrant street art, Jamestown offers a lively atmosphere, rich historical narratives, and a strong sense of community.

Accra - Volta
After enjoying breakfast, our day starts with a visit to the Shai Hills Reserve, a serene wildlife haven located just a short drive from Accra. This reserve offers a unique blend of nature and history, featuring savannah, rocky hills, and archaeological sites that include caves once inhabited by the indigenous Shai people. As we trek through the reserve, keep an eye out for various wildlife species such as baboons, antelopes, and an array of birdlife.
Following our exploration of Shai Hills, the journey continues towards the Volta Region, known for its scenic landscapes and rich culture. En route, we’ll have the opportunity to visit a Krobo family bead-making workshop. The Krobo people are renowned for their skills in bead-making, a craft passed down through generations. This visit offers a fascinating insight into the intricate process of bead-making, from baking the powdered glass to stringing the beads into beautiful designs. It’s a wonderful opportunity to engage with local artisans and perhaps purchase a few souvenirs.
The day concludes with a check-in at the Wli Water Heights. This accommodation is ideally located near the Wli Waterfalls, the highest waterfall in West Africa, and provides a comfortable and scenic base for your adventures in the Volta Region. The area around Wli Water Heights is tranquil and offers stunning views, making it a perfect place to relax and rejuvenate after a day of travel and exploration.

Volta - Akosombo
Today presents a fantastic blend of adventure and relaxation during our visit to Ghana. We start our morning with an energizing walk to the Wli Waterfalls, known locally as 'Vlee,' the highest waterfall in Ghana. This trek, lasting approximately 45 minutes, is not just a physical journey but a visual delight, offering lush scenery and the soothing sounds of nature that culminate at the stunning cascade. The Wli Waterfalls flow year-round and are surrounded by a cool mist and dense forest, providing a refreshing escape and a great opportunity for wildlife watching, with frequent sightings of butterflies and birds.
After visiting the waterfalls, we’ll have the chance to hike up Mountain Afadja, the highest peak in Ghana. This hike is a more challenging adventure, taking us through verdant rainforests and offering increasingly spectacular views as you ascend. Reaching the summit provides a sense of accomplishment along with panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
Following these exhilarating experiences, we retreat to the comfort of Afrikiko Riverfront Resort for a well-deserved rest day. This resort is ideally situated with a pool overlooking the river, creating a serene environment that encourages relaxation. The natural setting is vibrant with wildlife, including birds and monkeys, making it a perfect place to unwind and immerse yourself in nature.

Akosombo
Today we embark on a day filled with adventure and scenic beauty in Ghana. We start our morning with a hike up Mount Gemi, one of the less explored but incredibly rewarding hikes in the Volta Region. The trail to the summit of Mount Gemi is well-marked and offers a moderate challenge, suitable for most fitness levels. As you ascend, the path winds through lush greenery and occasional patches of small villages, giving you a glimpse into rural Ghanaian life. Upon reaching the top, we'll be rewarded with stunning panoramic views of the surrounding area, including a breathtaking vista of Lake Volta in the distance.
After descending from Mount Gemi, we transition from the heights of the mountains to the expansive waters of Lake Volta, one of the largest man-made lakes in the world by surface area. Here, we'll enjoy a relaxing cruise that not only offers a chance to unwind but also provides unique perspectives of the Ghanaian landscape from the water.

Akosombo - Cape Coast
Today we journey to the historic Cape Coast, a city steeped in cultural significance and colonial history. We begin the day with a leisurely drive towards Cape Coast, making a stop at Tam Tam Afrikiko Restaurant in Accra for a leisurely lunch. This popular dining spot offers a variety of dishes that showcase the rich flavors and culinary diversity of Ghanaian cuisine, providing a perfect break in our travel and a chance to sample some local favorites in a relaxed atmosphere.
After this we continue our journey, where the landscape starts to shift to tranquil coastal views. Upon arrival in Cape Coast, we'll enjoy a visit to a local basket weaving center. This experience offers a unique insight into one of Ghana’s traditional crafts. Basket weaving is an integral part of Ghanaian cultural heritage, and visiting the center allows the opportunity to observe skilled artisans at work, meticulously turning raw materials like reeds and grasses into beautifully crafted baskets.
This hands-on demonstration not only supports local artisans but also provides an opportunity to learn about the techniques, patterns, and meanings behind various basket designs. You might even have the chance to try your hand at weaving, making this visit both educational and interactive.

Cape Coast
After enjoying a hearty breakfast, we prepare for a day filled with adventure and historical exploration along Ghana's scenic coastline. Our first destination is Brenu Akyinim, a serene beach location known for its beautiful sandy stretches and clear waters. Here, you will engage in a thrilling kayaking experience. Paddling through the gentle waves of the Atlantic Ocean offers a unique perspective of Ghana's lush coastline and provides an exhilarating way to connect with the natural environment. Whether you are a seasoned kayaker or trying it for the first time, the experience at Brenu Akyinim is designed to cater to all skill levels, ensuring everyone enjoys their time on the water.
After your kayaking adventure, we dry off and continue our journey to one of Ghana's most significant historical sites, Elmina Castle. Built in 1482 by the Portuguese, Elmina Castle is one of the oldest European structures outside of Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Originally established as a trade settlement, the castle later became one of the most important stops on the Atlantic Slave Trade route. A guided tour of Elmina Castle will provide deep insights into the harrowing history of the transatlantic slave trade and the profound impact it had on the region. As you walk through the dungeons and stand by the "Door of No Return," you'll gain a poignant perspective on the human cost of the slave trade.

Cape Coast
Today promises to be filled with natural beauty, culinary exploration, and historical discovery on Ghana's vibrant coast.
We start our adventure at Kakum National Park, a dense tropical rainforest that is home to many endangered species and known for its famous Canopy Walkway. Suspended 30 meters above the forest floor, the walkway offers a unique vantage point from which to appreciate the park’s rich biodiversity. As we traverse the series of suspension bridges, keep an eye out for exotic birds, monkeys, and the lush vegetation that makes Kakum a haven for nature lovers and eco-tourists.
After immersing ourselves in the natural splendors of Kakum, we shift gears to a cultural experience with a cooking lesson at Global Mamas. This organization supports local women artisans and entrepreneurs through sustainable income opportunities. Here, you'll learn how to prepare traditional Ghanaian dishes under the guidance of experienced local cooks. This hands-on cooking class not only teaches you the techniques and ingredients used in Ghanaian cuisine but also offers insights into the cultural significance of food in daily Ghanaian life. We'll be able to enjoy the fruits of our labor by savouring the dishes we prepare, a tasty culmination of our culinary adventure.
The day concludes with a visit to the Cape Coast Castle, another significant historical site. Cape Coast Castle also played a pivotal role in the transatlantic slave trade and offers a profound look at Ghana’s colonial past. The castle now houses a museum with exhibits that narrate the history of the castle and the area, including the impact of the slave trade and the establishment of colonial rule in Ghana.

Cape Coast - Accra
Today we experience a rich immersion into Ghanaian culture with activities that connect deeply with local traditions and crafts. We begin the experience with a Batik making workshop, a vibrant and artistic endeavor. Batik is a method of fabric dyeing where parts of the fabric are covered with wax to resist colored dyes. It's not only a popular art form in Ghana but also throughout Africa. Under the guidance of skilled artisans, we'll learn to create our own Batik fabric, choosing designs and colors that reflect our personal taste. This hands-on workshop is a wonderful opportunity to engage with traditional craft techniques and to create a unique souvenir that represents your experiences in Ghana.
Following this, we will participate in a Traditional Naming Ceremony, a profound cultural experience that reflects the significance of names within Ghanaian society. In many communities, naming ceremonies are important rituals that introduce a new baby to the world, connecting the child with family and ancestors. Participating in such a ceremony offers a unique glimpse into the communal and familial bonds that are central to Ghanaian identity. It's a celebration that often includes music, dancing, and the sharing of wisdom and blessings by elders.
After these enriching cultural experiences, we make the journey back to Accra.

Depart Accra
Our final day offers a blend of cultural exploration and relaxation, perfectly rounding off your enriching experience in Ghana. We start the day by visiting a local Art and Craft Center. This venue showcases the rich creativity and skill of Ghanaian artisans, featuring an array of handicrafts including woven baskets, wood carvings, beaded jewelry, and traditional textiles. It's an ideal place to appreciate the fine craftsmanship and perhaps purchase some last-minute souvenirs that capture the essence of Ghanaian artistry.
Following lunch, we'll arrange transfers to the airport, marking the end of the trip. The drive to the airport is a chance to reflect on the memories and connections made during your stay. Once at the airport, you’ll proceed with the check-in for your international flight, carrying with you a rich tapestry of experiences from your time in Ghana.
